During a week in the Pyrenees, we discovered just how versatile and comfortable Overland Campers’ Mercedes Sprinter 4x4 really is—from the desert-like plains of Bardenas Reales to snow-covered mountain passes on the way to Andorra. Thanks to the powerful 4x4 drivetrain, the high level of comfort, and the complete off-grid amenities, we were able to travel farther than we ever had before. The camper provided freedom without compromise, just as their slogan promises.
Pyrenees, May 2025
For a week, we traveled through the Pyrenees as “overlanders,” and it was without a doubt one of the most well-rounded and unforgettable adventures we’ve ever had. The trip took us from the desert-like plains of Las Bardenas Reales to the rugged mountains around Rodellar and the picturesque highlands near Siurana. We ended with a spectacular drive straight through the mountains toward Andorra. The RV proved its worth in every landscape—from dusty desert trails to snow-covered mountain passes.
We had prepared ourselves for an adventurous week, but not for just how complete the experience would be. What struck us most was how this vehicle combines the freedom of a true expedition RV with the comfort of a well-appointed home. It’s not a choice between the two—it’s simply both.
First impression: space and freedom without compromise
Since we’d been traveling with a rooftop tent for years, we immediately noticed how much space and comfort this campervan offers. The layout is clever, and the build quality is high. Everything feels designed for practical freedom. Well-thought-out, spacious, and without unnecessary frills. You have everything you need, without sacrificing maneuverability or the ability to travel far off the beaten path. In fact, the campervan actually allowed us to go further than ever before. No compromises on the road and no compromises inside. That’s a rare combination.”
Driving behavior: confidence in every situation
The RV drove surprisingly smoothly, even considering its weight. Thanks to the suspension upgrade, cornering felt just like driving a passenger car, and bumps were nicely smoothed out. On narrow forest trails, cameras and sensors helped us maneuver safely.
Off-road, the RV really came to life. It remained stable on gravel, mud, and snow and navigated challenging terrain with ease. Large all-terrain tires, massive ground clearance, and a steep approach angle are exactly what you want when driving in an area where help isn’t nearby. The ability to lower tire pressure and then inflate them again later using the onboard compressor is an indispensable feature during mountain trips and tough off-road routes.
Off-grid camping: total autonomy
We spent a full week camping off-grid. With the Overland Studio app, finding wild camping spots is a piece of cake.
Thanks to the solar panels and charging via the alternator, the battery never dropped below fifty percent. Electric cooking, lighting, charging devices, and even electric heating all worked flawlessly. Hot water was always available, which is a luxury you really appreciate on active trips.
This is what sets a fully self-sufficient off-grid camper apart from a regular campervan: you aren’t dependent on anything. No campground needed, no hookups, no compromises on comfort. The camper is designed so that all the systems work together—solar panels, battery, heating, water. You don’t have to do a thing; it just works.
Sleeping and Living: A Sense of Home in the Heart of Nature
The bed is comfortable and comparable to a bed at home. Daily life flows effortlessly thanks to the ample storage space and well-organized layout. Cooking on an electric stovetop provides peace of mind and safety. During cold and rainy spells, the diesel heater warmed up the RV quickly, and the floor heating provided a pleasant sense of luxury. What we appreciated most after a week was how little the RV required of us. No hassle with gas, no searching for power, no wet belongings outside. You drive somewhere, you stop, and you live. It was that simple.”
The ultimate Overland moment
The highlight of the trip was the route through the Pyrenees toward Andorra. A picturesque mountain road turned into a challenging stretch due to rain and snow. Despite the slippery and narrow paths, the camper remained stable and easy to control. At that moment, I realized that this camper is built for exactly these kinds of conditions. Where this would have been impossible for others, the 4x4 Sprinter from Overland Campers was completely in its element here. This isn’t a vehicle you buy for its looks or to park at a campground. This is a camper built for adventure—and one that can truly handle it.
